Like a complex wine, this debut novel is a “blend,” distilled from stories of the Holocaust, winemaking and two neighboring families in Australia. Author Jessica Vance Schuster is the daughter-in-law of the late Bernie Schuster, a Holocaust survivor who made a new life for himself and his family in Rochester. Inspired by her 2009 travels in Australia, where she visited with Bernie’s extended family and spent time on the continent’s vineyards, Schuster examines identity, courage, loss and the third generation’s responsibility for their grandparents’ legacy.
Talk followed by a wine and cheese reception.
